How is IELTS tested?

The exam is composed of four stages to be completed in less than three hours: reading and writing tests, as well as a listening comprehension test and an oral test.
It is important to consider that the oral exam can be one or two days before the selected exam date, depending on availability.
The exam consists of the following parts:

  • Reading test: 1 hour
  • Writing test: 1 hour
  • Listening test: 40 min
  • Speaking test: 11-14 minutes

There are three sections where 40 questions of different types of academic and general readings are presented. An average of 2,150 to 2,750 words are read. The test lasts 60 minutes.

Users are asked to write texts on topics of general interest in a formal and semi-formal style. Two of them should be at least 150 words long and two more than 250 words long. The test lasts 60 minutes.

It consists of four sections where 40 questions of different types are presented.

The candidate listens to a conversation between two people in a common social context, a monologue in a common social context, a conversation between four people in an educational or professional context, and finally, a monologue in an academic context. The test lasts 40 minutes.

The candidate has a live interview with a Certified Examiner.

The interview is divided into three parts:

  • Introduction and interview (3-4 minutes)
The examiner introduces him/herself, asks the user to introduce him/herself and asks general questions about his/her family, work or studies.
  • Individual long turn (3-4 minutes)
The examiner gives the candidate a card with a specific topic. The candidate has one minute to prepare his/her speech and take notes. At the end, the examiner asks questions about the topic.
  • Discussion (4-5 minutes)
The examiner continues to ask the candidate questions on the previously developed topic.

The test has a total duration of 11-14 minutes.
